BAN 0:1 PHI, Jamie’s men succumb to luck

Sylhet: Bangladesh suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Philippines…. and luck in the last group game of the ongoing Bangabandhu Gold Cup 2018. The Red and Greens put Philippines under pressure right from the 6:30pm kick-off at the Sylhet District Stadium in Sylhet on Friday evening. Jamie’s men could have taken the lead had the crossbar not denied them in the opening minutes of the game. Philippines overcame the early wave of attacks by Bangladesh and countered with their own. Then an exquisite build-up play saw Filipino forward Kenshiro Michael Daniels through on goal from the last line of Bangladeshi defence who beat goalkeeper Rana with a grounded shot at the near post in the 23rd minute. Conceding the goal, Bangladesh responded strongly. But lack of clinical finishing saw their attacks thwarted at the Philippines backline. The team went into the break with Bangladesh 1-0 down. After the break, Bangladesh attacked with more urgency and venom. Chances after chances were created but old foe finishing inability came back to haunt Bangladesh time and again. When the referee blew the final whistle after 5 minutes of extra time, Bangladesh players were left to wonder how they could overcome finishing issues if they are to make good of their semi-final berth. Bangladesh go through to semis as group runners-up while Philippines claim the top spot in the group. Both side will be watching tomorrow’s Group A game between Palestine and Nepal to see who their opponents will be in the semis.
