The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is the top tier of the country’s football leagues. It is run directly by the Professional Football League Committee of Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF).
Founded in 2007, the league was previously known as the B League. The league was renamed to Bangladesh League in 2009. Then in 2012, it was renamed to Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
The start of BPL marked the start of professional era and a wide open national league.
Each season, 12 teams fight it out for the coveted trophy. Every team plays a total of 22 matches on home and away basis.
The teams gain 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and none for a loss. The team with most points is crowned as champions at the end of the season.
The two bottom teams on the points table are relegated to Bangladesh Championship League (BCL), the second-tier of the country’s football leagues.
