Arambagh surprise Ctg Abahoni to claim maiden Independence Cup title

Dhaka, February 10: Arambagh Krira Sangha beat defending champions Chittagong Abahoni in the final of the WALTON Independence Cup 2018 to secure the first title in their sixty-year history.

The Old Dhaka outfit were the superior side throughout the match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday.

Coach Maruful Haque’s boys hit the ground running from the moment the referee blew the kick-off whistle at 4:00pm.

The boys in red started tormenting the defence of the Chittagong Abahoni and it took them only 20 minutes to open the scoring.

Forward Arif combined fantastically with captain Sufil to put Arambagh in front.

A few minutes later, Arambagh’s right back Rockey surged though into the Abahoni backline to double Arambagh’s lead on the 45th minute.

The teams went into the break with Arambagh 2-0 ahead.

After the break, Chittagong Abahoni showed purpose in their movement but in vain.

Arambagh’s Md Jewel was awarded for being the top goal scorer of the tournament with three goals while Md Arif was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
