U16 girls down but not out

Chonburi, September 12: The Bangladesh national U16 women’s team are down but not out as they look forward to restore some pride in the second match of the AFC U16 Women’s Championship 2017 against Japan on Thursday.

Bangladesh opened their campaign on a rather discouraging note with a 9-0 defeat to DPR Korea in the Group B opener on Monday.

Notably, Japan thrashed Australia 5-0 in their opening Group B game on the same day.

Bangladesh head coach Golam Rabbani Choton said that his girls would give it their all in the second match against Japan and would fight till the end.

Choton made the statement while he was talking to the newsmen on Tuesday during the team’s training session at the Institute of Physical Education Campus Stadium, Chonburi; also the venue of the second match.

“Our next match is with Japan. They are also a very strong team. Our players will try to give their all in the second match,” Choton said.

Underlining the high standard of top level international football, Choton said, “Now, all the players understand the standard of world class football. This tournament will help us for the future development of our women football.”

Asked about the players’ physical condition, the coach said that all the players are physically fit and are ready to fight for the next match.

The head coach said “DPR Korea was a very strong team. They are the current world champions at this age level. Some of our players could not show their true potential in the first match and our goalkeeper also made some mistakes. Otherwise, we would have conceded less number of goals than we did.”

The girls in red and green had an hour-long training session on Tuesday morning at the match venue.

They will lock horns with Japan in their second group game on Thursday at 4:00pm Bangladesh time.
