Maldives claim 2nd SAFF crown beating India 2-1

Dhaka: The Maldives have won their second SAFF Championship trophy by beating India 2-1 in the final of the SAFF Suzuki Cup 2018 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka on Saturday. The Maldivian team started the game with a positive vibe. It took the islanders only 19 minutes to break the deadlock through Ibrahim Mahudhee. The teams went into the break with reigning champions India a goal down. After the break, Maldives again gave the young Indian side a run for their money. Ali Fasir netted the second for Maldives in the 66h minute to really put India up against it. Desperate, India came down hard on the islanders but could only manage a consolation goal through Sumeet Passi in the second minute of extra time. The final whistle blew to crown Maldives the new champions of South Asian football. With the victory, Maldives goes a step ahead Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan (former SAFF member) who each have one championship with India sitting pretty at the top with 7.
