Fareast International University crowned Faraaz Gold Cup champions

Dhaka: Fareast International University has been crowned the champions of the second edition of Faraaz Gold Cup football tournament. Fareast International University, runners-up of the first edition, beat South East University 8-7 in tie-breakers after the final match finished goalless after regulation time at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday. Both the teams created chances inside regulation time but lack of clinical finishing took the game to penalties. Fareast netted 8 of their 9 spot kicks to South East’s 7 out of 9 to avenge last year’s final defeat. At the presentation ceremony, Fareast International University were given a golden champion’s trophy, 2 lac taka and champion’s medals for each player. Mitul, of the champion team, was named the player of the final. IUB’s Intesar and Piash claimed the golden boot as joint top scorers of the tournament. Fareast’s Shohag was awarded the golden gloves as the best goalkeeper of the tournament. Moreover, Fareast captain Sujoy was named the best player of the tournament. Meanwhile, State University was awarded the fair play trophy. The second edition of the Shah Jalal Islami Bank Faraaz Gold Cup Inter University Football tournament began on July 25 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. Organised by the Sonali Otit Club, an organisation of former footballers, the first edition of the tournament was held with 20 private universities at the Bir Sreshtha Mostafa Kamal Stadium in the capital. The inaugural edition of the tournament was named Faraaz Challenge Cup football tournament when Green University celebrated the title as the unbeaten champions after defeating Fareast International University by 2-0 in the final. This time more than 20 universities are participating in the competition.
