Abahani secures BPL title with one match remaining

Dhaka, January 6: Abahani Limited Dhaka have retained their Bangladesh Premier League title with one match remaining for the team.

Playing with passion and showing professionalism enabled Dhaka Abahani Ltd. to retain their Bangladesh Premier League title for a record sixth time from nine editions.

With one match to spare, the traditional sky blue outfit beat Sheikh Jamal 2-0 on Friday securing 51 points from 21 matches to seal the top spot. Second-placed Sheikh Jamal have 47 points from the same number of outings meaning if Abahani even lose their last match it would have no consequence upon the title.

Abahani beat Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club 2-0 in the second leg match on Friday. The first encounter had ended in a 1-1 draw.

Nasir Chowdhury headed home from Sohel Rana’s cross to take the defending champions ahead on the 23rd minute of the first half at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

Nigerian forward Sunday Chizoba cemented Abahani’s win with a ball behind the net in the extra time.

Supporters of the sky blues poured into the pitch at the whistle to celebrate the team’s 6th BPL title.

Dhaka Abahani confirmed the title with 51 points from 16 victories and three draws in 21 matches and will face Chittagong Abahani in their last match on Thursday.

Sheikh Jamal is just behind Dhaka Abahani with 47 points from the same number of matches.

The championship trophy will be handed over to the team after the league ends on January 13.
