Dhaka: The second phase of Bangladesh Premier League 2018-19 is set to begin on Saturday, April 6, 2019.
The exhilarating Bangladesh Premier league started in January 18 this year. The new season has already seen 2 months of exciting football from the flagship domestic tournament including amazing goals, exciting derby matches and individual majestic plays.
The 2019 installment of BPL has 13 teams in total and the matches are played in six different venues where different teams have their ‘homes’. The reigning champions Dhaka Abahani Ltd. started off the season with a win against NoFel Sporting Club in their home ground Sher-e-Bangla National stadium having a score line of 2-1. Rubel Miya scored in just 8 minutes of the match. The relatively new team NoFel fought back impressively against the goliath, Abahani Ltd.
The highest scoring match of the 10 rounds played was between Dhaka Abahani Ltd. and Rahmatganj MFS. Abahani thrashed the opposition scoring 5 times and Nabib Newaz Ziban scoring a hat trick. The legendary classic match between Dhaka Abahoni Ltd. and Mohammedan SC took place on 28th February at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. The in-form Abahani side steamrolled over their struggling rivals with a prominent score line of 3-0.
Bashundhara Kings, the Nilphamari club is currently on the top of the leaderboard with 9 games played. They have 1 draw against BJMC and is only two points shy of a perfect run. Dhaka Abahani Ltd. is breathing down their neck with only 1-point difference although they have played 1 extra match. In the third position is Sheikh Russel FC with 20 points. In the bottom of the table, Mohammedan FC have 5 points in the 10 matches that they have played. BJMC and Brothers Union have 3 points each and are currently sitting at the relegation zone. BJMC has yet win a match in the BPL 2018-2019.
Individual performances have made headlines in the two months of the BPL season. Sunday Chizoba of Abahani Ltd Dhaka is the top scorer till now with 8 goals, followed by Ballo Famoussa from Muktijoddha FC with 7 goals. Two Bangladeshi forward, Mohamed Zahid Hossain and Nabib Newaz Ziban have 6 goals each. The matches saw 47 yellow cards and 5 red cards. The attendance in the stands was more than satisfactory.
The Bangladesh Premiere League will resume tomorrow with match day 11 of the season. More exciting actions of country’s top tier of domestic football is yet to grace the fans’ eyes.
