Bangamata Gold Cup: Bangladesh in semis as group champs

Dhaka: Bangladesh U19 women’s national team has made it to the semifinals of the ongoing Bangamata U19 Women’s International Gold Cup 2019 as the champions of Group B. The Bengal girls beat Kyrgyzstan 2-1 in the final group match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka on Friday evening. Midfielder Sanjida Akhter put Bangladesh in front in the very first minute of the game. Bangladesh created many chances in the first half but were left to rue below-par finishing. However, in the second half, Bangladesh did double their lead in the 59th minute through Krishna Rani Sarker. A defensive mistake by Bangladesh saw Akhmatkulova Zairina pull one back for Kyrgyzstan in the 69th minute. Nevertheless, the Kyrgyz never looked like creating much of a problem for Bangladesh and the Red and Greens left the field 2-1 winners at the final whistle. Sanjida Akhter was awarded a cheque of USD 500 as she was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match. Bangladesh will play in the second semi-final on April 30 as the champions of Group B. On the other hand, Kyrgyzstan will play the first semi-final against the Group A champions a day earlier. The Group A places will be finalized after the last group game between Laos and Tajikistan on Saturday. Notably, the Laos versus Tajikistan match has been postponed to 8:30pm from 6:00pm on Saturday.
